What happens on 2 August 2027, and why this particular eclipse matters.
When exactly is the 2027 total solar eclipse?
Monday 2 August 2027. In Egypt the partial phases begin between about 11:22 and 11:48 local time (EEST, UTC+3) depending on where you are, totality falls between roughly 12:42 and 13:17, and the eclipse finishes between about 14:08 and 14:34. In Luxor the sequence is 11:40 – 13:02:03 – 13:08:24 – 14:26. The whole event takes a little under three hours.
How long does totality last?
Up to 6 minutes 23.2 seconds, at the point of greatest duration on the central line at 26.9°N, 31.1°E — near Sohag in Upper Egypt. Sohag itself gets 6m 22s, Luxor 6m 20s, Qena 6m 11s and Bahariya Oasis 6m 17s. Greatest eclipse occurs at 10:06:38 UTC at 25.5°N, 33.2°E, in Egypt’s Eastern Desert.
Why is this eclipse considered so special?
Three reasons together. It is the longest totality visible from land anywhere on Earth between 1991 and 2114. The Sun is almost overhead — 79–83° across the Egyptian path — so nothing on the ground can block it. And it crosses one of the most reliably cloud-free regions on the planet in its driest season. Individually each of those is good; the combination is exceptional.
How wide is the path of totality, and where does it go?
The path is roughly 258 km wide where it crosses Egypt. It begins in the Atlantic and runs across southern Spain, Gibraltar, northern Morocco, northern Algeria, Tunisia and Libya into Egypt, then over the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia, ending in the Indian Ocean. Is a 99% partial eclipse nearly as good as a total one?
No, and this is the single most misunderstood point about eclipses. A partial eclipse of 99% is still a partial eclipse: the sky is oddly dim, the corona is invisible, and it is never safe to remove your filters. Totality is a different category of experience — the Sun’s atmosphere appears, stars and planets come out, the horizon glows orange in every direction. The step from 99.9% to 100% is larger than the step from 0% to 99.9%.
Will it go completely dark?
Not quite. Totality looks like a deep twilight rather than a moonless night. The sky overhead goes dark enough for Venus, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and the brighter stars to appear, while a band of orange sunset light circles the whole horizon — that light is coming from outside the Moon’s shadow, up to 129 km away in every direction. Then it ends as abruptly as it began.
What are the technical numbers for this eclipse?
Greatest eclipse at 10:06:38 UTC, at 25.5°N, 33.2°E. Eclipse magnitude at greatest eclipse 1.0790; gamma 0.1421. It is member 38 of 71 in Saros series 136 — the same series that produced the long eclipses of the late twentieth century. What will I actually see during totality?
The last sliver of Sun breaking into Baily’s beads, then a single brilliant diamond ring, then the silver-white corona surrounding a black disc almost directly overhead. Look for pink-red prominences at the Moon’s edge, planets and bright stars, the 360° horizon glow, and rippling shadow bands on pale ground in the last seconds before and after. The temperature drops noticeably, and the wind often changes.
Where to go
The path crosses Egypt from the Western Desert to the Red Sea. Some places are much better than others.
Where is the best place in Egypt to watch the eclipse?
Luxor is the headline answer: 6m 20s of totality, the Sun 82° up, an international airport, rail connections, and the temples of ancient Thebes as a foreground. Sohag is technically better still at 6m 22s and only 9 km from the central line, but has far less visitor infrastructure. Qena, Bahariya, Marsa Alam and Berenice are all strong. Will I see totality from Cairo or the Pyramids?
No. Cairo sees a 94.81% partial eclipse and Giza 95.22% — impressive, but not totality, and the corona will not appear. Cairo is about 303 km from the central line; the nearest point inside the path is roughly 175 km away, and 260 km of driving gets you a full six minutes. If you want the Pyramids and the eclipse, do the Pyramids on a different day.
What about Aswan and Abu Simbel?
Both are outside the path. Aswan reaches 99.82% obscuration and Abu Simbel 92.00%, and neither sees a single second of totality. Aswan is the great near-miss of this eclipse: the path edge is only about 15 km away, and 99 km of driving north buys the full six minutes. If you are staying in Aswan, arrange transport into the path in advance.
Is Hurghada in the path of totality?
No. Hurghada sees a 98.54% partial eclipse, about 194 km from the central line. The path edge is roughly 65 km to the south, and 151 km of driving reaches a full six minutes. Marsa Alam, further down the same coast, is inside the path with 5m 29s — so if the Red Sea is your plan, base yourself south.
Nile valley or Red Sea coast?
The valley gives the longest totalities, the highest Sun, the driest air and the temples — along with 40–43°C and the biggest crowds. The Red Sea gives a sea breeze, resort infrastructure, direct charter flights into Marsa Alam (RMF), a clean sea horizon and about fifty seconds less totality. Both are excellent. Does it really matter if I am a few kilometres off the central line?
Near the middle of the path, no. Luxor is 16 km off the line and loses three seconds. Near the edges it matters enormously: Kom Ombo gets 3m 35s and El Quseir only 2m 28s, both still total but well down on the maximum. Check your exact spot on the interactive map — you can click anywhere.
Can I see this eclipse outside Egypt?
Yes. The path crosses southern Spain (Tarifa gets 4m 39s), northern Morocco (Tangier 4m 51s), Tunisia (Sfax 5m 40s), Libya (Benghazi 6m 09s) and Saudi Arabia (Jeddah 5m 59s), among others. Egypt has the longest durations and by far the best August cloud prospects, but it is not the only option — see the path beyond Egypt.
Practicalities
Booking, travel, heat and the shape of eclipse day.
When should I book?
As early as you can. Accommodation is the binding constraint: the towns on the central line have small room stocks, specialist eclipse operators have been selling 2027 departures for years, and eclipse chasers routinely book half a decade ahead. Secure a bed first — refundable if possible — then arrange flights, transport and itinerary around it.
How do I get to Luxor?
By air into Luxor International (LXR), about an hour from Cairo, with seasonal international charters as well. By rail on the Nile-valley main line, including the Cairo–Luxor sleeper, roughly ten to eleven hours overnight. By road it is around four hours from Hurghada across the Eastern Desert and about three hours from Aswan along the river. Book trains and flights for eclipse week well in advance.
Do I need a visa for Egypt?
Requirements depend on your nationality and change over time, so check the current rules yourself with the Egyptian authorities and your own government’s travel advice, and check again shortly before you travel. Anything specific written years ahead of 2027 risks being out of date. Whatever the process turns out to be, start it months rather than weeks in advance.
How hot will it be?
Typical early-August highs in the Nile valley are 40–43°C, and totality falls at about 13:00 — the hottest hour of the hottest month. The Red Sea coast is a few degrees cooler and more humid thanks to the sea breeze. Carry three to four litres of water per person, take electrolyte salts, wear loose long sleeves and a wide brim, and arrange shade you control. See the weather guide.
What are the chances of cloud?
Long-term August statistics for the Luxor–Aswan corridor are in the region of 90–95% clear, which is about as good as eclipse climatology gets anywhere. The larger atmospheric risk is airborne dust or haze rather than cloud, which mutes the outer corona without hiding the eclipse. None of this is a forecast for the day — keep a vehicle and an alternative site available.
Is a Nile cruise a good way to see the eclipse?
Potentially an excellent one. A boat moored mid-river gives an uninterrupted 360° horizon, which is the best way to appreciate the ring of orange twilight, and it removes the eclipse-morning transport problem. The essential check is position: confirm in writing that the vessel will be inside the path and stationary at totality. A boat that has sailed south past Kom Ombo towards Aswan on the morning could easily miss it.
Should I book an organised tour or travel independently?
Specialist eclipse tours handle the logistics, choose the site and usually carry an astronomer; they cost more and sell out first. General Egypt tours are cheaper but may treat the eclipse as an incidental — ask exactly where the group will stand at 13:00. Independent travel gives you complete control over your observing site, which is the thing that determines your eclipse, at the price of doing the work yourself.
What should I do on eclipse morning?
Be in position and set up by noon at the latest. Pre-book a car and driver for the day, with the waiting arrangement agreed in advance. Know your exact contact times and have them written on paper. Expect crowds and possible road closures near major archaeological sites. And plan to be stationary at 13:00, not travelling — see plan your trip and eclipse-day events.
Is 2 August 2027 a working day in Egypt?
It falls on a Monday, an ordinary working day in a country whose weekend is Friday and Saturday. Whether any special arrangements, holidays, site closures or transport changes are announced for the eclipse is not something anyone can state today; watch official Egyptian government and tourism-ministry announcements closer to the time.
Safety
The one part of eclipse planning where there is no room for improvisation.
Do I need eclipse glasses?
Yes. For the entire partial phase — roughly 80 minutes before totality and 78 minutes after it — you must use filters certified to ISO 12312-2. Bring several pairs per person from home rather than relying on buying them locally, and inspect them for pinholes and damage before use. Full detail in the eye safety guide.
Is it safe to look at totality without a filter?
Yes — during totality only, and it is not merely safe but necessary. The corona is roughly as bright as a full Moon, and through eclipse glasses you would see nothing at all. Take the glasses off when the first diamond ring goes out, and put them straight back on at the first flash of the second diamond ring. Egypt’s long totality makes that timing comfortable rather than frantic.
Are sunglasses, welding glass or exposed film safe?
Sunglasses are not safe under any circumstances, however dark or however many pairs. Exposed film, smoked glass, CDs, foil and neutral-density photographic filters are all unsafe — several of them look dark while passing dangerous infrared. Only filters made and certified for direct solar viewing will do; welding glass is acceptable only at shade 14 or thereabouts.
How do I avoid counterfeit eclipse glasses?
Buy from an established astronomy retailer, telescope maker, planetarium or science museum rather than an anonymous marketplace listing, and prefer sellers who name the manufacturer of the filter material. Printed ISO wording proves nothing on its own; it is trivially copied. If a national astronomical society publishes a vetted supplier list before 2027, use it.
Is it safe for children?
Yes, with supervision. Children are the highest-risk group because glasses slip, get pushed up or are peered around. Assign one adult per one or two children for the whole partial phase, use child-sized viewers or hold the filter for them, and give indirect methods — pinhole projection, a colander, crescents under a palm tree — as the main activity. Agree in advance who will call “glasses off” and “glasses on”.
What if I am somewhere with 99% coverage rather than totality?
Then your filters stay on for every second of the eclipse. There is no moment at 99%, or at 99.82% as in Aswan, when it is safe to look unprotected. The safety question is binary: either the Sun’s bright surface is completely covered, or it is not.
Photography
A long, high totality is the most forgiving thing that can happen to an eclipse photographer.
What lens should I use?
On full frame, 400–600 mm is the sweet spot: large enough to show prominences and coronal structure, wide enough to keep the outer streamers. Beyond 800 mm you risk clipping the corona; below about 200 mm the disc is small. Multiply by your crop factor on APS-C. And bring a wide lens too — the landscape with the 360° horizon glow is the shot people forget.
Do I need a solar filter on the camera?
Yes, for every second of the partial phases, mounted on the front of the lens. It protects the shutter and sensor as well as your eye. Neutral-density filters are not a substitute at any strength. The filter comes off at second contact and goes back on the instant the second diamond ring appears.
What exposure should I use during totality?
There is no single correct exposure — the corona spans an enormous brightness range, and every good coronal image is a blend of many frames. Shoot raw in manual mode and run wide brackets: very roughly, at ISO 100 and f/8, the inner corona wants something like 1/250–1/60 s and the outer corona 1/4–1 s. Treat those as a starting point to bracket around and test beforehand. See the photography guide.
Can I photograph the eclipse with a phone?
Not the corona, realistically — the focal length is far too short and automatic exposure struggles badly. Phones are good for wide shots of the darkened landscape, video of the light change and the crowd, a time-lapse of the whole event, and shooting the partial phases through a spare pair of eclipse glasses. Then put it away.
Is anything unusual about photographing a Sun that is nearly overhead?
Yes, and it catches people out. At 79–83° altitude many ball heads and pan-tilt heads simply cannot point that high without the lens fouling the tripod, and an optical viewfinder becomes unreachable. Test your rig at home aimed 80° up, and consider a gimbal head, an angled bracket, working off the rear screen, or a polar-aligned star tracker.
What is the one piece of photography advice worth following?
Automate what you can, take the frames you planned in the first two-thirds of totality, and then deliberately stop and watch with your own eyes. Better photographs than yours will be published within hours. The memory of standing under the corona for six minutes will not be available anywhere else.
