Luxor Total Eclipse
Ancient Thebes on the centre line — the single best place on Earth to watch this eclipse.
If you could choose one spot on the planet to stand on 2 August 2027, a strong case says it should be Luxor. The city sits just 16 kilometres from the central line of the eclipse, which buys it 6 minutes 20 seconds of totality — within three seconds of the theoretical maximum for the entire eclipse. The Sun will be 82° above the horizon, almost straight overhead, so there is no ridge, minaret or hotel block anywhere that can get in the way.
Then there is the setting. Luxor is built on top of ancient Thebes, the religious capital of the New Kingdom and the centre of the cult of Amun-Ra — a sun god. For a little over six minutes, the sun that the Karnak priesthood spent two thousand years honouring will go out over their temple.
Add the climate — early August in Upper Egypt is about as close to a guaranteed clear sky as this planet offers — and Luxor becomes the headline destination of the 2027 eclipse. Plan accordingly: so does everyone else.

- 11:40 First contact The Moon takes its first bite out of the Sun’s edge. Nothing is visible without eclipse glasses — put them on now.
- 13:02:03 Totality begins — second contact The last sliver breaks into Baily’s beads, then the diamond ring. When the ring goes out, glasses off.
- 13:05:14 Mid-eclipse Deepest darkness. The corona surrounds a black Sun 82° above the horizon; look for planets and the horizon glow.
- 13:08:24 Totality ends — third contact A second diamond ring flares on the opposite limb. Glasses back on the instant it appears.
- 14:26 Fourth contact The Moon leaves the Sun’s disc and the eclipse is over.

Why Luxor is the best seat in the house
Three things decide how good a total eclipse is: how long it lasts, how high the Sun sits, and whether you can see the sky at all. Luxor scores near the top on all three.
Duration: 6m 20s, against a maximum of 6m 23s
The greatest duration anywhere on Earth for this eclipse is 6 minutes 23.2 seconds, on the central line near Sohag. Luxor is 16 km off that line and roughly 130 km down-track, and gives up just three seconds for it. In practice this is the difference between an outstanding eclipse and an outstanding eclipse — you will not notice. For comparison, the 2024 North American eclipse peaked at 4m 28s, and the 2026 eclipse over Spain managed 1m 48s at its very best.
Altitude: 82°, effectively overhead
This matters more than people expect. In Spain in 2026 the eclipsed Sun sits 2–12° above the horizon, which means hunting for a west-facing hilltop and praying that no haze, dust or building sits in the way. In Luxor the Sun is 82° up. You can watch it from a hotel roof, a felucca, a temple forecourt or a patch of desert, and nothing on the ground can block it. Shadows at mid-eclipse will be almost directly beneath your feet.
Cloud: statistically, the odds are excellent
Upper Egypt in August is one of the driest places on Earth. Long-term August cloud statistics for the Luxor – Aswan corridor sit in the region of 90–95% clear, and rain in August is close to a non-event. The real atmospheric risk is not cloud but dust: a khamsin-type sand haze can mute the corona. It is an uncommon problem in August, but not an impossible one.
Where to actually stand in Luxor
Because the Sun is nearly overhead, you do not need a view. You need shade before and after, somewhere to put a tripod, and ideally a foreground worth photographing. That inverts the usual eclipse-chasing logic: in Luxor, choose your site for what is on the ground.
East bank
- Karnak Temple. The great hypostyle hall, a forest of 134 columns, with the sky going dark above it. Expect this to be the single most contested piece of ground in Egypt on the day, very probably ticketed and capacity-controlled. Assume you will need to book something official.
- Luxor Temple. Smaller, right in the middle of town, walkable from most hotels, and flanked by the avenue of sphinxes. Same caveat about crowds.
- Corniche and hotel roofs. Underrated. A rooftop on the east bank gives you the Nile, the west-bank cliffs, air conditioning ten metres away, and no transport problem at all on eclipse morning.
West bank
- Deir el-Bahari (Hatshepsut’s terraced temple) set against its amphitheatre of cliffs — visually the most dramatic option in the area.
- The Colossi of Memnon, open, flat, easy to reach and free to stand near, with two 18-metre statues in the frame.
- The desert edge beyond the Valley of the Kings. Empty, silent and wide open. You will need a driver willing to wait, and a genuine plan for heat and water.
On the water
A dahabiya or cruise boat moored mid-river gives a 360° horizon, which is the thing worth having: during totality the whole sky darkens except for a band of orange twilight all the way around the horizon, and open water is the best place to see that effect. Nile cruise operators are already selling eclipse sailings for this date.
The heat is the real problem, not the eclipse
Totality falls at 13:02 in the afternoon on 2 August. That is the hottest hour of the hottest month in one of the hottest inhabited valleys on Earth. Daytime highs in Luxor in early August routinely reach 40–43°C, and the record is higher still. It is a dry heat, which helps, but standing in open desert at midday in August is genuinely dangerous if you treat it casually.
Plan for the heat with the same seriousness as the eclipse
Carry far more water than feels necessary — three to four litres per person for a half-day out. Bring electrolyte salts. Wear a wide brim and loose long sleeves rather than less clothing. Have shade you control: an umbrella, a gazebo, a vehicle you can retreat into. And build your day around being stationary at 13:00, not travelling at 13:00.
One quietly wonderful detail: during totality the temperature will actually drop, sometimes noticeably, because you have removed the Sun for six minutes. Regulars on long eclipses describe a distinct cool breeze as the shadow arrives. In August in Upper Egypt, that will be the most welcome wind of your life — and then it will end.
Getting to Luxor, and booking in time
By air. Luxor International (LXR) has frequent domestic connections from Cairo (about an hour) and seasonal international charters. Expect capacity to be the constraint, not routes.
By train. The Cairo–Luxor sleeper is a genuinely pleasant way to arrive, roughly 10–11 hours, and the daytime express services run the length of the Nile valley. Book early; this is the corridor everyone will want.
By road. Luxor to Hurghada is around four hours across the Eastern Desert, and Luxor to Aswan is about three hours along the Nile. Both are relevant escape routes if you end up based outside the path.
Book absurdly early
Luxor has perhaps 15,000 hotel rooms. This eclipse is the longest totality visible from land for 123 years, it lands on a Monday over the most famous archaeological site on Earth, and eclipse-tour operators began selling it years in advance. Rooms for eclipse week will sell out long before 2027, and prices will not be sentimental. If Luxor is your plan, treat accommodation as the first thing you book and everything else as negotiable.
If Luxor itself is full, you are not stuck. Qena (6m 11s), Esna (5m 45s) and Sohag (6m 22s) are all inside the path and all within reach of Luxor by road. The eclipse does not care which town you slept in.
What six minutes of totality actually feels like
Most people’s only reference is a partial eclipse, and partial eclipses are a completely different event. Below about 99% coverage, the sky simply looks slightly odd. Totality is a different category of experience, and Luxor gets an unusually generous helping of it.
In the final minute before 13:02:03, the light goes wrong in a way that is difficult to describe: colours flatten, shadows sharpen to knife edges, and the temperature drops. Rippling shadow bands may skate across pale ground and walls. Then the last sliver of Sun shatters into Baily’s beads, flares once as the diamond ring — and goes out.
With the Sun 82° overhead, the corona will hang almost directly above you: a silver-white halo, structured with streamers, far larger and more delicate than any photograph prepares you for. The horizon in every direction glows sunset-orange. Venus will be easy, well up and to the west; Mercury, Mars and Jupiter are also above the horizon, and bright stars become visible. Look for pink-red prominences hugging the black edge of the Moon.
Six minutes is long enough to do all of it without panic — look with your eyes, then binoculars, then take the photograph, then put the camera down and just watch. Take the last thirty seconds and simply stand there. At 13:08:24 the diamond ring returns on the other side, and it is over.

Exactly how long does totality last in Luxor?
6 minutes 20 seconds, from 13:02:03 to 13:08:24 local time (EEST, UTC+3). The partial phases run from 11:40 to 14:26, so the whole event takes about two and three-quarter hours.
Is Luxor actually inside the path of totality?
Yes, comfortably. Luxor sits about 16 km from the central line, in a path roughly 258 km wide. It is nowhere near the edge, and the whole Luxor area — east bank, west bank, Karnak, the Valley of the Kings — is inside.
Will it be too hot to be outside?
It will be around 40–43°C at 13:00 in early August. That is manageable with shade, water and sensible clothing, and dangerous without them. Plan to be in position and stationary well before totality rather than moving around in the peak heat.
Do I need eclipse glasses if totality lasts six minutes?
Yes. You need certified ISO 12312-2 glasses for the 80 minutes of partial phases before totality and the 78 minutes after it. Luxor or Aswan?
Luxor, without hesitation. Aswan is outside the path — it gets 99.8% coverage and zero seconds of totality, which sounds close and is not. Aswan is about 15 km south of the path edge, so a short drive north on the day fixes it, but if you are choosing a base, choose Luxor.
When should I book?
As early as you possibly can. Specialist eclipse tours for Luxor have been selling since well before 2027, and the city’s room stock is small relative to the demand this event will generate. Accommodation is the binding constraint — secure it first.
