What this site does not collect
A plain-English statement, not a legal instrument. The short version: this site sets no cookies, runs no analytics, has no accounts and no database of readers. The longer version explains the two places where other companies can still see you.

What is collected
By this site itself: nothing that identifies you. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, no newsletter, no comment system, no shopping basket, no advertising and no analytics or tracking scripts. Nothing you do on these pages is stored against you.
The one unavoidable exception is the ordinary web-server log. Like every web server, the machine hosting this site records requests — typically the IP address, the time, the page requested, and the browser’s user-agent string. That happens at the hosting level for security and diagnostics, it is not linked to anything else, it is not sold, shared or used to build a profile, and it is not consulted in the normal running of the site.
What is not collected
- No name, email address or contact details — unless you choose to email, in which case the message sits in an ordinary mailbox and is used only to reply.
- No advertising or cross-site tracking identifiers.
- No analytics profile, session recording or heatmapping.
- No payment information: nothing is sold here.
“My location” on the interactive map
The eclipse map has a button that finds where you are so it can compute your eclipse circumstances. Here is exactly what happens when you press it.
The page calls the browser’s standard Geolocation API. Your browser — not this site — asks your permission, and if you refuse, nothing happens. If you agree, your browser hands the page a latitude and longitude. That pair of numbers is passed straight to the eclipse engine running in your own browser tab, which works out your contact times, duration and the Sun’s altitude, and draws a marker on the map.
Your coordinates never leave your browser
They are not transmitted to this site, not sent to any server, not logged, not stored and not remembered between visits. The eclipse calculation is pure JavaScript running on your own device, so there is nothing to send. Close the tab and the position is gone. The same is true of any point you click on the map by hand.
Note the one thing this does not cover: your browser may use your operating system’s own location service to work out where you are, and that service is run by your device or browser vendor, under their privacy policy, not this site’s. And loading map tiles for the area you are looking at reveals your rough area to the tile provider, as below.
Third parties whose servers your browser contacts
This site pulls a handful of resources from other companies. Anything your browser fetches from another company’s server means that company receives a request from your IP address, along with the usual headers a browser sends. That is inherent to how the web works, and each of them has its own privacy policy, which this site has no control over.

Map tiles are requested only for the area you are actually viewing, so a tile provider can infer roughly which part of the world you are looking at — which is not the same as where you are. If you would rather none of this happened, a browser extension that blocks third-party requests will stop it; the text and the eclipse numbers still work, but the map will not.
Cookies
This site sets no cookies of its own. There are no consent banners here because there is nothing to consent to. The third parties listed above may set cookies or use similar storage under their own policies when your browser contacts them; that is between you, your browser and them.
If you email
Messages sent to the address on the contact page arrive in an ordinary mailbox held with a commercial email provider. They are read, used to reply and to correct the site, and not added to any list, shared or sold. Ask and the message will be deleted.
Changes, and the status of this page
If what the site loads or does changes, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change with it.
