Qena & Dendera Total Eclipse
Six minutes of totality above the best-preserved zodiac ceiling in Egypt.
Qena stands at the great bend of the Nile, the point where the river swings furthest east and comes closest to the Red Sea. On 2 August 2027 it collects 6 minutes 11 seconds of totality — nine seconds behind Luxor, which is a difference you could not measure with your own senses if you tried. The town sits about 31 kilometres from the central line, comfortably inside a path roughly 258 km wide, with the Sun 81° above the horizon.
What makes Qena worth a page of its own is on the other side of the river. Four kilometres across the Nile, at the edge of the cultivation, stands Dendera — the temple of Hathor, and the single richest surviving record of how the ancient Egyptians drew the sky. Its great hall is roofed with a painted map of the heavens: the sky goddess Nut swallowing and rebirthing the Sun, the thirty-six decan stars, the planets riding in their barques, and a zodiac imported from the Greek world and made thoroughly Egyptian. For six minutes on a Monday in August 2027, the real sky above that painted one will go out.
Practically, Qena is a working provincial capital: a market town, a pottery town, a railway stop on the Cairo–Aswan main line, and the junction where the desert highway peels east towards Safaga and Hurghada. It is not a resort and does not pretend to be. But it is an hour from Luxor, it is squarely in the path, and on a day when every room in Luxor will have been sold three times over, that combination is worth knowing about.
Totality here runs from 13:01:32 to 13:07:43 local time — half a minute earlier than Luxor, because the Moon’s shadow reaches Qena first on its way down the valley.

Nine seconds behind Luxor — and why that is not a reason to move
Eclipse duration is decided almost entirely by one thing: how far you are from the central line of the path. Qena is about 31 km off it. Luxor is about 16 km off it. That 15 km of extra offset costs Qena nine seconds out of three hundred and eighty. It is a rounding error.

Chasing the maximum from Qena would mean driving north-west towards Sohag for a gain of eleven seconds. Do not do it. Spend the morning somewhere you actually want to be standing, and let the geometry look after itself.
The Sun is effectively overhead
At mid-eclipse the Sun sits 81° up on a bearing of 195° — very slightly west of due south, and near enough vertical that no wall, palm, minaret or cliff can get between you and it. This is the great luxury of the Egyptian leg of this eclipse: you are not hunting for a view. You are choosing a foreground.
Dendera: a painted sky under a real one
The temple of Hathor at Dendera is late — largely Ptolemaic and Roman, raised and decorated across the last century BC and the first century AD, when Egypt was already an old country being run by foreigners. That lateness is exactly why it survives so completely, and why its ceilings still carry paint.
The columns
You come in through a pronaos whose columns are each crowned with the four-faced head of Hathor, cow-eared and staring outwards in all four directions, so that whichever way you turn the goddess is looking back. Beyond it the temple runs deep into shadow: hypostyle hall, offering hall, sanctuary, a ring of chapels, and a set of stone crypts in the thickness of the walls.
The astronomical ceiling
The ceiling of the outer hall is the reason astronomers make the trip. It is laid out in long bands: the sky goddess Nut arched across the whole width with the Sun passing through her body, the decan stars that the Egyptians used to tell the hours of the night, the planets as gods sailing in boats, the northern constellations including the great bull’s foreleg that stood for the stars we call the Plough. Decades of soot from centuries of fires lit inside the hall were removed in recent restoration campaigns, and the colours that came back out — deep blues, ochres, greens — are startling.
The zodiac on the roof
Dendera’s most famous object is no longer at Dendera. The circular zodiac from the ceiling of a small Osiris chapel on the temple roof was cut out and taken to France in 1821 and is now in the Louvre; a cast occupies the original space. It is a genuine hybrid — Babylonian and Greek zodiac signs mixed with Egyptian decans and constellations — and scholars have argued that the arrangement of its figures records specific eclipses, and can be used to date the ceiling to the middle of the first century BC. The argument is not universally accepted. It is still an extraordinary thought to carry with you into the courtyard on eclipse day.
The roof of the temple is reached by two staircases carved with processions of priests, and it is an excellent open platform. Whether visitors will be allowed up there at 13:04 on 2 August 2027 is another question entirely — assume that the whole site will be ticketed, capacity-controlled and heavily oversubscribed, and that arrangements will not be published until relatively late.
Where to stand around Qena
Because the Sun is nearly overhead, altitude and horizon are irrelevant here. What you want is shade you control before and after, a level place for a tripod, and something in the frame worth having.
- Inside the Dendera enclosure. The forecourt in front of the pronaos, the mud-brick enclosure wall, the sacred lake, the Roman birth house, the ruined Coptic basilica — the site is large and open and there is far more standing room than the temple itself suggests. Contested ground, but the best foreground in the region after Karnak.
- The desert edge behind Dendera. The temple sits where the fields stop and the low desert begins, with the cliffs behind. Walk or drive a few hundred metres out and you have flat open ground, silence, and a clean line of sight to the western horizon — useful, because the umbra arrives from the west-north-west and on flat ground you can sometimes watch it come.
- The Qena corniche. Unglamorous and completely practical. The river is wide here, the embankment is long, and you can walk to it from anywhere in town rather than sitting in eclipse-morning traffic.
- On the water. A boat moored mid-river gives you the full 360° ring of orange twilight around the horizon, which is one of the strangest and most under-photographed parts of a total eclipse. Qena is on the Luxor–Dendera excursion route, so day boats do work this stretch.
Be stationary by 12:30
Totality begins at 13:01:32 and there is no second attempt. Whatever your plan, build it so that you are parked, shaded and set up half an hour before the partial phase gets deep. The single most common way to lose an eclipse is to still be driving.
Getting to Qena, and using it as a base
By rail. Qena is a scheduled stop on the Cairo–Luxor–Aswan main line, including the overnight services. It is one of the easier towns in Upper Egypt to reach without a car.
By road from Luxor. Roughly 60 km, around an hour, on either bank. This is the standard half-day Dendera excursion and drivers in Luxor run it constantly.
By road from the Red Sea. The Qena–Safaga highway crosses the Eastern Desert to the coast, and this is the main artery between the Nile valley and the Red Sea resorts. It matters for eclipse planning: Hurghada is outside the path, and this is the road its visitors will use to get into it.
Expect the Safaga road to be busy that morning
Anyone based on the Red Sea coast who wants totality has to come inland, and this is the obvious route. Do not plan to be crossing the Eastern Desert between 11:00 and 13:00 on eclipse day. Cross the day before, or leave at first light.
Where to stay. Qena’s hotel stock is modest and aimed largely at domestic and business travellers rather than international tourism. Realistically, most visitors will sleep in Luxor and come north for the day, or sleep in Qena precisely because Luxor is full. Both are reasonable. What is not reasonable is assuming that something will be available in July 2027 — this eclipse has been on specialist tour calendars for years, and the room stock in the whole valley is small relative to the demand.
Midday heat, and the six minutes themselves
Mid-eclipse falls at 13:04:38 — the hottest hour of the hottest month in one of the hottest inhabited valleys on the planet. Early August highs in this stretch of Upper Egypt sit in the low forties Celsius. It is a dry heat and it is survivable, but standing on open desert at midday in August is genuinely dangerous if you approach it casually: carry several litres of water per person, take electrolyte salts, wear a broad brim and loose long sleeves rather than less clothing, and have shade you can retreat into. The one thing you cannot improvise in the Eastern Desert is shade.
The compensation is real. As the last of the Sun goes, the temperature drops noticeably and a cool draught comes with the shadow. In Upper Egypt in August that will be the most welcome wind of your life.
What happens between 13:01 and 13:08
In the final minute the light stops behaving. Colours flatten, shadows narrow to razor edges, and the pale limestone of Dendera takes on a hard metallic grey. Watch a white wall or a sheet on the ground for shadow bands — faint ripples of light that skate across pale surfaces in the last seconds. Then the remaining sliver of Sun breaks into Baily’s beads, flares once as the diamond ring, and is gone.
With the Sun 81° up, the corona hangs almost directly overhead: a silver-white halo with structured streamers reaching out several solar diameters, far larger and more delicate than photographs suggest. The whole horizon glows sunset-orange in every direction at once. Venus will be obvious; Mercury, Mars and Jupiter are all above the horizon; bright stars appear. Along the black rim of the Moon, look for the pink-red flames of prominences.
Six minutes and eleven seconds is a generous allowance. Spend the first thirty seconds looking with nothing but your eyes, then binoculars, then take your photographs, then put everything down and stand still for the last minute. At 13:07:43 the second diamond ring flares on the opposite limb, eclipse glasses go straight back on, and it is over.
Qena & Dendera eclipse questions
How long does totality last in Qena?
6 minutes 11 seconds, from 13:01:32 to 13:07:43 local time (EEST, UTC+3) on Monday 2 August 2027. The partial phases run from 11:39 to 14:25, so the whole event lasts about two and three-quarter hours.
Is Dendera itself inside the path of totality?
Yes. Dendera lies about 4 km across the river from Qena town, and both are well inside a path roughly 258 km wide. The difference in duration between the temple and the town centre is a fraction of a second.
Qena or Luxor?
For the eclipse itself there is almost nothing in it — 6m 11s against 6m 20s. Choose on everything else: Luxor has the monuments, the flights, the rooms and the crowds; Qena has Dendera, an easier morning and far fewer people. Many visitors will sensibly sleep in Luxor and drive up to Dendera for the day.
Will I be able to watch from inside the temple?
Nobody can promise that yet. Dendera is one of the most photogenic viewing sites in Egypt and it is a fair assumption that access on 2 August 2027 will be ticketed and capacity-limited, with details announced relatively close to the date. Have a fallback site in mind that needs no permission at all — the desert edge outside the enclosure, or the Qena corniche.
Is it worth driving to Sohag for the extra eleven seconds?
No. Sohag gets 6m 22s against Qena’s 6m 11s. Eleven seconds is not worth a long drive on a hot morning, and the risk of being caught in traffic during totality is far more expensive than the reward. Go to Sohag for Abydos, not for the seconds.
Do I still need eclipse glasses?
Yes. Certified ISO 12312-2 filters are essential for the roughly 80 minutes of partial eclipse before totality and the 77 minutes after it. Only during the 6m 11s of totality itself do you take them off, and they go back on at the first flash of the second diamond ring. See the eye safety guide.
