Kom Ombo gets a real total eclipse on 2 August 2027 — and only 3 minutes 35 seconds of it. That is a little over half of what Luxor receives on the same afternoon, from a town that sits on the same river only 170 km away. This page exists mainly to explain why, and to make one recommendation as loudly as possible: if you can drive north on the morning of the eclipse, drive north.

The reason is geometry. The Moon’s shadow is a rough circle roughly 258 km across sweeping over Egypt. Stand near its centre line and you are crossed by a full diameter of shadow — six minutes and more. Stand near the rim and you are clipped by a short chord. Kom Ombo sits close to the southern edge of the path, in the part of the curve where every kilometre costs you real time. Its eclipse magnitude is 1.007: the Moon’s disc covers the Sun’s by less than one per cent of a solar diameter. Luxor’s is 1.035.

None of which is an argument against the place itself. The double temple of Sobek and Haroeris stands on a low promontory in a bend of the Nile, directly above the water, and it is one of the most beautifully sited buildings in Egypt — a temple built twice over, in perfect mirror symmetry, for two gods who had no business sharing a roof.

So: come for the temple. Watch the eclipse from further up the river.

  • 11:42 First contact The Moon takes its first bite out of the Sun’s edge. Nothing is visible without eclipse glasses — put them on now.

Why only 3m 35s?

Duration of totality is decided by one thing above all others: your perpendicular distance from the central line. The falloff is gentle near the middle and brutal near the edge. Compare the four temple towns on this stretch of river, all of them well inside Egypt, all of them under a Sun 82–83° high:

Look at the last two rows. Between Kom Ombo and Aswan, roughly 45 km apart, totality goes from three and a half minutes to nothing at all. That is what the edge of an eclipse path looks like: not a gradient but a cliff. Aswan sees 99.82% of the Sun covered and gets not one second of corona, because the last 0.18% is the whole event.

Kom Ombo is on the safe side of that cliff — it is genuinely, definitively inside the path, and you will see a real total eclipse there. It is just standing much closer to the edge than to the middle.

Kom Ombo has the highest Sun of any town in the Egyptian path

At mid-eclipse the Sun stands 83° above the horizon on a bearing of 205° — seven degrees off the zenith. The corona will be almost exactly overhead. Bring something to lie down on; after three minutes of looking straight up, your neck will thank you.

The drive that buys you minutes

This is the practical heart of the page. The main valley road runs north from Kom Ombo to Edfu, and every kilometre of it is worth something.

  • 30–40 km north of Kom Ombo, roughly halfway to Edfu, puts you appreciably deeper into the path. Nothing on the ground marks the improvement — it is just open agricultural country and desert edge — but the numbers move, and they move fast on this part of the curve.
  • Edfu, about 60 km north, gets 5m 31s. That is nearly two extra minutes for an hour’s driving. There is no better return on a tank of fuel anywhere in this eclipse.
  • Luxor, about 170 km north, gets 6m 20s. Three hours, and almost double.

Expect the Aswan road to be the busiest tarmac in Upper Egypt that morning

Aswan is a major tourist city with thousands of beds, and it is outside the path — about 15 km from the edge. Everybody staying there who wants totality has to drive north on the same road on the same morning, and Kom Ombo is the first place on it with a name on the map. Assume congestion. Leave at first light, and go further north than the crowd does.

The timing changes as you move

Totality at Kom Ombo begins at 13:06:01, but the shadow arrives progressively earlier the further up-track you go — 13:04:06 at Edfu, 13:02:03 at Luxor. If you drive north, your deadline gets tighter, not looser. Be parked and set up by 12:30 wherever you end up.

The double temple of Sobek and Haroeris

Egyptian temples are almost always built on a single axis: one gateway, one processional route, one sanctuary. Kom Ombo has two of everything, laid side by side and mirrored down the middle.

The southern half belongs to Sobek, the crocodile god, with Hathor and Khonsu. The northern half belongs to Haroeris — Horus the Elder, ‘Horus the Good Doctor’ — with Tasenetnofret and Panebtawy. Twin entrances, twin colonnades, twin hypostyle halls, twin sanctuaries. Priests of both cults worked the same building simultaneously without ever crossing the centre line.

The temple as it stands is Ptolemaic, begun in the second century BC on a site with a much longer history, and completed under the Romans. Rather less of it survives than at Edfu — the Nile has taken part of the forecourt and much of the roof is gone — and for eclipse purposes that absent roof is an advantage. A good deal of Kom Ombo is open to the sky.

Details worth looking for:

  • The relief on the rear outer wall, usually described as a display of medical or surgical instruments laid out on a table. What the objects actually are is still argued over, but the association with Haroeris the healer is a fair one.
  • A finely built nilometer, a circular stone well shaft in the enclosure, used to read the height of the flood.
  • The Crocodile Museum beside the temple, which displays mummified crocodiles recovered from the site — sacred animals of Sobek, buried in numbers.
  • The setting itself. The temple stands on a rise directly above a bend in the Nile, and the classic view of it is from the water at the end of the day.

The town, and getting here

Modern Kom Ombo is an agricultural town about 45 km north of Aswan, in sugar-cane country, with a large processing industry. It is also a place with a particular recent history: much of the surrounding district was developed in the 1960s to resettle the Nubian communities whose villages were flooded by the reservoir behind the Aswan High Dam. Nubian is spoken here, and the area is often called New Nubia. It is worth knowing whose ground you are standing on.

Getting here

By boat — the usual way. Kom Ombo is a fixed stop on Luxor–Aswan cruise itineraries, generally a short evening or early-morning call. By road — 45 km north of Aswan, 60 km south of Edfu, on the main valley highway. By rail — there is a station on the Cairo–Aswan line.

Staying

Very little. Kom Ombo is not an overnight town for visitors; the tourism model is an hour at the temple and back on the boat. If you want to be in this part of the valley on 2 August 2027, you will almost certainly be sleeping in Aswan, on a boat, or in Luxor.

Heat

This is the southernmost place on this list and the hottest. Early August daytime highs in the Aswan–Kom Ombo stretch run into the low-to-mid forties Celsius, and the eclipse spans 11:42 to 14:29 — the whole of the worst part of the day. Three to four litres of water per person, electrolyte salts, a wide brim, loose long sleeves rather than less clothing, and shade you brought with you. If your plan involves standing in an open temple enclosure for three hours, it needs an umbrella in it.

If you stay put: what 3m 35s looks like

Let us be clear about what is on offer here, because ‘only 3m 35s’ is a relative judgement made from an unusually spoiled position. Three and a half minutes of totality is a very substantial eclipse by any normal standard. It is nearly twice the maximum duration of the 2026 eclipse over Spain (1m 48s, with the Sun barely above the horizon). It is short only by comparison with what is available 60 km up the road on the same afternoon.

The character of a shorter totality is different, though, and it is worth planning for. The corona at Kom Ombo will be the same corona, but you have roughly half the time to take it in, and the edge effects last proportionally longer — because you are nearer the rim of the shadow, the diamond ring and Baily’s beads will be drawn out and prominent, and the sky will not go quite as deeply dark as it does on the central line. Some observers actively prefer that: the beads are spectacular, and you can watch sunlight streaming through lunar valleys for several seconds at each end.

13:06:01. The last sliver breaks into beads, flares as the diamond ring, and goes out. Filters off immediately — you have no seconds to waste here.

The three and a half minutes. Do it in one pass and do not be greedy. Naked eye first, because that is what you will remember. The corona 83° overhead, silver-white with streamers. Pink prominences on the black limb. One turn to see the orange twilight round the whole horizon and Venus well up. Then, if you must, thirty seconds of camera. Then back to looking.

13:09:36. The second diamond ring, glasses on, and it is over — with the shadow still travelling east across the desert towards the Red Sea, where it will give Berenice a full six minutes.

Is Kom Ombo actually inside the path of totality?

Yes — definitively. It sees 100% obscuration and a genuine total eclipse with corona, prominences and darkness. But it sits near the southern edge of the path rather than near the middle, with an eclipse magnitude of just 1.007, which is why the duration is short.

How far north do I have to drive to get more?

Every kilometre helps, and it helps quickly here. Thirty to forty kilometres north puts you noticeably deeper into the path; Edfu at about 60 km gets 5m 31s, nearly two minutes more than Kom Ombo; Luxor at about 170 km gets 6m 20s. Check a specific spot on the eclipse map before you commit.

I am staying in Aswan. Is Kom Ombo far enough?

It is far enough to see totality, and that is the important threshold — Aswan itself gets none. But it is the minimum, not the target. Kom Ombo is the first named place north of Aswan inside the path, so it will attract the largest share of the traffic while delivering the least totality. Push on to Edfu if you possibly can, and leave Aswan very early.

Is watching from inside the temple a good idea?

Much of Kom Ombo has lost its roof, so a lot of the interior is open to the sky and, with the Sun 83° up, that is all you need. Whether the site will be accessible at 13:06 on 2 August 2027 is unknown — assume ticketing and capacity limits, and have an unrestricted fallback nearby.

Do I need eclipse glasses for a totality this short?

More than ever. You need ISO 12312-2 certified filters from 11:42 to 13:06:01 and again from 13:09:36 to 14:29, and with only 3m 35s in between there is no margin for fumbling. Practise getting them off and on. See the eye safety guide.
