Sfax is the point on this eclipse track where the numbers stop being merely good and start being excellent. Tunisia’s second city gets 5 minutes 40 seconds of totality from 10:08:45 local time (UTC+1) on Monday 2 August 2027, with the Sun 56° above the horizon. That is a full minute longer than Tangier and eighteen degrees higher in the sky.

It is also, refreshingly, not a resort. Sfax is a working port and industrial city of olive oil, phosphate and fishing, with a walled medina that is among the best preserved in North Africa precisely because it never became a set piece. Visitors here are outnumbered by people going about their business, and that will be true on eclipse day too.

The city’s greatest asset for this eclipse lies twenty kilometres offshore. The Kerkennah Islands are so flat and so low that the horizon runs unbroken all the way around — and an unbroken horizon is exactly what you want when the sky darkens and a band of false sunset appears in every direction at once.

Tunisia’s share of the shadow

The umbra reaches Tunisia having already crossed Morocco and northern Algeria, and by the time it arrives the geometry has improved considerably. The Sun has climbed to 56°, the path is running across flat, dry, open country, and the duration on the central line is comfortably over five and a half minutes.

Practically, 56° is a comfortable altitude to observe at. It is high enough that ordinary buildings, palm trees and low hills will not block your view, so you do not have to hunt for a clear eastern horizon the way you must in Tarifa. It is low enough that the sky retains some directionality during totality: the darkness is noticeably deeper towards the west, from where the shadow arrives, and there is a real chance of seeing the umbra approach if you have a long view in that direction.

Where to be

  • The Kerkennah Islands. A ferry runs from Sfax across to the archipelago, roughly an hour and a quarter. The islands are almost entirely flat, barely above sea level, fringed with palms and surrounded by shallow water. Nothing obstructs anything. If the ferry timetable works for you on the day — and you must check it carefully, because 10:08:45 is not negotiable — this is the most atmospheric site in the region.
  • The corniche and the port. Sfax faces east onto the Gulf of Gabès, so the seafront gives you open sky in the direction of the Sun and a long view across the water.
  • The olive country inland. West of the city the land is covered in one of the largest olive plantations on Earth — endless rows of low grey-green trees on red soil, running to the horizon. It is empty, easy to park in, and visually unlike anywhere else on the eclipse track. Under a dimming Sun, olive foliage does something extraordinary with the light.
  • El Jem. About 65 km north of Sfax stands one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in existence, built in the third century to hold tens of thousands of spectators, still standing to three tiers. Whether it falls inside the path and what duration it gets is a question for the interactive map — but if the answer works, watching a total eclipse from inside a Roman amphitheatre is a hard thing to beat.

Kerkennah: flat islands, fixed fisheries and an unbroken horizon

The Kerkennah archipelago is the sort of place that makes no sense until you go. The islands rise only a couple of metres above the sea; the water around them is so shallow that boats follow marked channels for kilometres; and the Gulf of Gabès has one of the few substantial tidal ranges in the whole Mediterranean, so the shoreline moves visibly through the day.

Out of that shallowness comes the charfia: a fixed fishing system of palm-frond fences driven into the seabed in long V-shaped arrays, guiding fish into traps at the apex. It has been worked here for centuries and is inscribed on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. At low water the fences stand out of the sea like drawn lines.

For an eclipse this is close to ideal terrain. With the Sun 56° up and the land essentially at sea level in every direction, you get:

  • A complete 360° horizon, which is where the deep orange twilight ring appears during totality.
  • Nothing at all to obstruct the Sun, whatever direction you face.
  • Water on all sides, which turns a startling colour as the light drains away.
  • Almost no artificial light to confuse your dark adaptation.

An island is a commitment

If you plan to watch from Kerkennah, go across on 1 August and stay the night. A ferry crossing on the morning of the 2nd puts a single vessel, a single timetable and a single queue between you and the eclipse, and totality begins at 10:08:45 whether or not you are aboard. Accommodation on the islands is limited, so arrange it early.

The city, the medina and the day itself

Sfax rewards the visitor who is not looking for a resort. Its medina is enclosed by ninth-century walls that are still largely intact, entered through the Bab Diwan, and it functions as a real market rather than a souvenir bazaar: metalworkers, carpenters, spice sellers, olive-wood turners. The Great Mosque at its centre dates from 849. Outside the walls, the French-era town has boulevards, cafes and a nineteenth-century grid.

How the day will run

  • 08:56 — first contact. Glasses on. Nothing is yet visible to the unaided eye.
  • 09:30 onwards — the crescent narrows. Look for pinhole crescents under palm fronds and in the shade of the medina’s lattices; the effect is at its best in strong overhead sun.
  • 10:05 — the light goes wrong. Colours flatten, shadows knife-sharp, an audible change in the behaviour of birds.
  • 10:08:45 — Baily’s beads, diamond ring, totality. Glasses off.
  • 10:11:35 — mid-eclipse. The corona 56° up in the east-south-east; Venus and Jupiter above the horizon; a ring of orange all round.
  • 10:14:25 — third contact, second diamond ring, glasses straight back on.
  • 11:31 — it is over. Two hours thirty-five minutes end to end.

Note that this is a mid-morning eclipse, which is a practical gift. You can be in position by 09:00 without having stood in the sun for four hours, and the worst of the August heat arrives after the event rather than during it.

Tunisia keeps UTC+1 all year

There is no summer-time change to catch you out: Tunisian clocks read UTC+1 on 2 August 2027, the same as Morocco and one hour behind Spain, Libya and Egypt. Totality at 10:08:45 local is 09:08:45 UTC.

Weather and heat in the Tunisian Sahel

Early August in the Sfax region is hot and very dry. Rain in August is close to non-existent along this coast, and the odds of a clear sky at 10:08 are high — not quite the near-certainty of Upper Egypt, but substantially better than the Strait of Gibraltar. This is one of the more reliable stretches of the whole track.

Two things to watch for:

  • The chili. A hot, dry southerly off the Sahara can push temperatures sharply up and fill the air with fine dust. It will not usually hide the Sun at 56°, but it mutes the corona and flattens the horizon glow. It is not common in any given week, but it is the local risk.
  • Coastal humidity. The Gulf of Gabès is shallow and warm, and mornings on the coast can be muggy with a little haze. A short distance inland, into the olive country, the air is typically drier and cleaner.

Expect daytime highs in the mid-thirties Celsius, with the eclipse falling before the peak. Carry water, wear a hat, and remember that standing still in the open for two and a half hours is more demanding than walking around for the same period.

Eye protection, all but 5m 40s of the time

Filters certified to ISO 12312-2 are required from 08:56 to 10:08:45 and again from 10:14:25 to 11:31. Only during the 5 minutes 40 seconds of totality is it safe to look with the naked eye — and at that point you must, because eclipse glasses show nothing at all. Getting to Sfax

  • By air. Tunis–Carthage is the country’s main international gateway, around 270 km north of Sfax. Enfidha, Monastir and Djerba also handle international traffic and may be closer depending on your route. Sfax has its own smaller airport at Thyna.
  • By road. The A1 motorway runs down the coast from Tunis through Sousse to Sfax, and the drive is straightforward. Distances in Tunisia are modest, which makes it a good country in which to keep a cloud-avoidance option open on the morning.
  • By rail. Trains link Tunis, Sousse, El Jem and Sfax along the coastal line. El Jem station is a short walk from the amphitheatre.
  • To Kerkennah. Vehicle and passenger ferries run from Sfax port to Sidi Youssef on the islands. Crossing time is roughly an hour and a quarter, and sailings are busier in August than at any other time.
