Alexandria Partial Eclipse
Mediterranean Egypt sees a 93% partial eclipse.
Of all the Egyptian cities on this site, Alexandria gets the least of this eclipse. On Monday 2 August 2027 the Mediterranean coast sees a 93.35% partial eclipse, maximum at 12:51:38 with the Sun 76° above the horizon — the lowest obscuration and the lowest Sun of any major Egyptian city. Alexandria is at the wrong end of the country for this one, and no plan can change that.
There is an irony here that is too good to leave out. Around 240 BC the librarian Eratosthenes measured the size of the Earth using two places: Alexandria, where he stood, and Syene — modern Aswan — where the midsummer Sun stood directly overhead. In 2027 both of his measuring stations miss totality. Aswan misses it by fifteen kilometres. Alexandria misses it by several hundred.
So this page does two things. It tells you honestly what 93% will look like from the Corniche, and it sets out the two real escape routes: south through Cairo into the Nile valley, or west along the coast and inland to the oasis of Siwa. Both are long. Both are worth it.

The city that measured the Sun
Alexandria has the strongest claim of any city on Earth to be the birthplace of quantitative astronomy, and it is worth understanding what happened here before deciding what to do on eclipse day.
Eratosthenes and the well at Syene
Eratosthenes of Cyrene ran the Library of Alexandria in the third century BC. He knew that at Syene, far up the Nile, the midsummer noon Sun cast no shadow — it stood at the zenith and lit the bottom of a well. In Alexandria on the same day, a vertical gnomon did cast a shadow, and the angle worked out at about one-fiftieth of a full circle. If the Earth were a sphere and the Sun effectively infinitely distant, the distance from Alexandria to Syene had to be one-fiftieth of the planet’s circumference. He multiplied, and got roughly 252,000 stadia — a figure that, depending on which stadion he was using, lands within a few per cent of the correct answer.
It is a beautiful piece of reasoning and it works from a shadow and a walk. Two thousand two hundred and seventy years later, the geometry of the Sun, the Moon and this same stretch of coast is being computed to the second from Besselian elements — and it is the same problem, solved with better tools.
Hypatia, Ptolemy and the rest
Claudius Ptolemy compiled the Almagest here in the second century AD, and its tables of solar and lunar motion were the basis of eclipse prediction across Europe and the Islamic world for well over a thousand years. Hypatia taught mathematics and astronomy in this city until her murder in 415. Whatever happens in the sky on 2 August, the ground you are standing on is where humanity first got serious about working out where the Sun would be.
Where to feel it today
- The Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The modern library on the Corniche, a vast tilted disc of granite facing the sea, with a planetarium in the plaza outside it. The most fitting place in the city to watch a partial eclipse, if you are staying.
- The Citadel of Qaitbay. Built in the fifteenth century on the site of the Pharos, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, using some of its fallen stone. It sits at the tip of the eastern harbour with open sky in every direction.
- Kom el-Shoqafa and Pompey’s Pillar. Roman Alexandria underground and above it.
- The Corniche itself. Fifteen kilometres of seafront. At 76° altitude you need no view at all, but if you want the light on the water, this is where it will be.
What 93.35% will actually do
Alexandria’s eclipse runs from 11:29 to 14:11, two hours forty-two minutes in total, with maximum at 12:51:38. At that moment about one-fifteenth of the Sun’s disc is still uncovered.
One-fifteenth of the Sun is a lot of Sun. The sky will stay blue. The sea will stay lit. Nobody will need a torch. What you get instead is a subtle wrongness: light that has lost its warmth, shadows with unusually hard edges, and a noticeable easing of the heat. If you are indoors and not paying attention, you can miss the entire thing — and many people in the city will.
The reliable ways to see it, rather than merely be present for it:
- Through certified glasses, checked every ten minutes or so from 11:30. Watching the bite grow is the whole pleasure of a partial eclipse.
- Pinhole projection. Punch a small hole in a card and let the Sun through it onto a second card in shadow. Or find a tree: the overlapping leaves make hundreds of pinholes and the pavement fills with crescents.
- A colander over white paper is the crowd-pleaser, and it is entirely safe.
- Watch the sea. The Mediterranean’s colour under a 93% eclipse is genuinely peculiar — it goes flat and slightly leaden while the sky above it stays blue.
There is no safe moment in Alexandria
Because the city never reaches totality, filters certified to ISO 12312-2 must stay on for the entire 162 minutes. Sunglasses, exposed film, smoked glass, welding glass below shade 14, CDs and phone screens are all useless and dangerous. Read the eye safety guide before the day.
Route one: south, through Cairo, into the valley
This is the obvious plan and the one most people will take. Alexandria to Cairo is about 180 km in a straight line, a fast and frequent train journey of roughly two to two and a half hours on the main line, or a comparable drive on the desert road. Cairo is where every onward option begins.
From there the path is still 175 km further south, so this is emphatically not a same-morning journey. Alexandria to the nearest totality is a full day’s travel in any realistic scenario. Plan it as a move, not a trip:
- To Minya — about 353 km from Alexandria in a straight line, reachable by rail via Cairo. 4m 07s of totality from 12:55:34. The shortest journey from Alexandria that gets you a genuine total eclipse.
- To Asyut or Sohag — further up the same railway line, and worth it: 6m 07s and 6m 22s respectively. Sohag has the longest totality of any Egyptian city.
- To Luxor — the sleeper from Cairo, or a domestic flight. 6m 20s beneath an 82° Sun, over Karnak. If you are going to travel the length of Egypt, travel the length of Egypt.
Whichever you choose, arrive on 1 August at the latest. Nothing about this route survives a delayed train on the morning of the 2nd.
Route two: west along the coast to Siwa
Here is the option that belongs to Alexandria specifically, and almost nobody will think of it.
The coast road runs west from Alexandria along the Mediterranean to Marsa Matruh, about 255 km, past the El Alamein battlefields and a string of beaches with the clearest water in Egypt. From Matruh a good tarmac road turns south into the desert and runs another 290 km or so to Siwa Oasis — and Siwa is inside the path, with 5 minutes 29 seconds of totality beginning at 12:42:32, the earliest totality anywhere in Egypt.
Siwa is roughly 477 km from Alexandria in a straight line and something over 540 km by that road. It is a long way. It is also one of the strangest and most beautiful places in the country: a depression below sea level filled with 300,000 date palms and olive trees, salt lakes that float you like the Dead Sea, the mud- brick ruin of the Shali fortress, and the Temple of the Oracle of Amun, where Alexander the Great came in 331 BC to be told he was the son of the god — shortly after founding the city you would be leaving.
Alexandria’s neatest eclipse itinerary
Leave the city on 31 July, break the journey at Marsa Matruh, arrive in Siwa on 1 August, and watch five and a half minutes of totality over the Oracle of Amun on the 2nd — the same god, and very nearly the same shadow, that Alexander came out here to consult. It is a considerable undertaking and the desert leg needs a proper vehicle and a proper plan, but as eclipse trips go it is hard to beat for narrative.
Practical notes: this is remote desert driving with long gaps between fuel and services, in August, at the hottest hour of the year. Travel with plenty of water, a full tank, and someone who knows the route. Check current access requirements for the western frontier region before committing, as arrangements in border areas can change.
Weather, and why the coast is the weakest link
One more reason Alexandria is not the place to be: it has the least reliable sky in the country.
August on the Mediterranean coast is effectively rainless — rain here falls in winter — but “no rain” and “no cloud” are not the same statement. The sea breeze that makes an Alexandrian summer bearable also feeds humidity into the lower atmosphere, and coastal stratus, morning murk and high haze are all commoner here than they are 700 km up the Nile. Upper Egypt in August is one of the driest, clearest places on the planet; the Delta coast is merely quite good.
At 76° altitude the Sun is high enough that low-level haze is not a serious threat to seeing the partial phases. But the general point holds and it applies to the whole trip: every kilometre you travel south improves your odds as well as your duration. Alexandria in early August
- Daytime highs typically around 30–33°C — markedly cooler than Cairo or Luxor, but humid with it.
- A steady northerly sea breeze most afternoons.
- Long summer evenings on the Corniche; the city is at its most alive in August.
- Peak domestic holiday season. Alexandria fills with Egyptian visitors escaping the interior heat, and accommodation is tighter in August than at any other time of year — eclipse or no eclipse.

Can I get from Alexandria to the path of totality on the morning of the eclipse?
Realistically, no. Even the nearest total-eclipse location is a full day’s travel away, and totality in the valley begins between 12:50 and 13:10. Move to a location inside the path on 1 August at the latest.
Is the Bibliotheca Alexandrina a good place to watch?
It is the most appropriate place in the city, with open sky, a seafront setting and a planetarium on site, and it would be a reasonable guess that something will be organised there — though nothing can be confirmed this far ahead. It is still a partial eclipse, however good the venue.
Will clouds be a problem on the Mediterranean coast?
August is rainless in Alexandria, but coastal humidity, morning stratus and haze are all more likely here than in Upper Egypt, which is among the clearest places on Earth in summer. For an eclipse, travelling south improves both your duration and your odds of seeing it.
